Find Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch between Airport Express speakers from my device?

Yes! As of version 1.1 Signal can be used to select either individual or multiple speakers.

Can I use Signal to stream music to my device?

Signal acts as a remote control for your Mac or PC's media player, it does not stream music directly to your iPhone or Pocket PC. If you're looking for a way to stream music to your stereo, Signal works great with dedicated streaming solutions like the Airport Express.

Will it work on my Windows Mobile Smartphone?

At this time Signal only supports the iPhone, iPod touch, and Windows Mobile Pocket PCs.

How do I install the Pocket PC client from a Mac?

Enter the web access URL in Pocket Internet Explorer on your device. You will be presented with an option to install the Pocket PC client wirelessly via Internet Explorer.

What is your upgrade policy?

All minor version updates are free, so if you purchase Signal 1.0 you'll also receive all 1.x updates at no additional charge. Major version upgrades (e.g., 1.x to 2.x) will typically require an upgrade fee, which is a significant discount over the purchase price. In addition, if a major version upgrade is released within 60 days of your purchase you will receive a free upgrade to the new version.

My device can't connect to the Signal server

In most cases connection problems are the result of a software firewall (Windows Firewall, Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm, etc.) blocking communication between the Signal server and your device. In order for Signal to work properly you'll need to ensure that 1) the Signal server is allowed access to the network and 2) network communication is permitted between your device and the computer running the Signal server.

If you're using a Mac and your firewall is on, you'll need to open a port to allow your device to communicate with your Mac. To do that, Open System Preferences, click Sharing, then the Firewall tab. Click “New…” and select “Other” for the port name. Enter 3569 for TCP Port Numbers and Signal for the description, then click OK and try connecting again.

Why is the connection icon constantly displayed on my iPhone or iPod touch?

To support two-way communication between your computer and your iPhone or iPod touch, Signal leaves up a persistent connection and this is why the connection icon is always displayed. The benefit to this is that whenever something changes on your computer's media player it will be displayed on your iPhone almost immediately.

Note that this doesn’t prevent the iPhone or iPod from entering sleep mode and doesn’t consume any additional power while in sleep (the connection is closed and re-opened when the device wakes).
